As part of a $37 billion program, General Motors plans to bring at least 30 battery-electric vehicles to market by mid-decade — but it is expanding its electrification strategy to power up pretty much anything “already on the road,” as well as on the water, it announced on Wednesday.

The largest of the Detroit automakers’ Electric Connect and Cruise eCrate systems will allow owners to swap out their conventional gas engines in classic vehicles like the Camaro and E-10 pickup for battery-drive technology. GM also is looking to power up cargo tractors and other airport gear, while also working up ways to bring electric propulsion to the marine industry.

“GM has an established strategy, network of integrators and co-development agreements to apply an extensive array of components and solutions to a broad range of customers and use cases,” said Travis Hester, GM vice president of Electric Vehicle Growth Operations, in a statement Wednesday.

The carmaker estimates there’s a “total addressable market” for swapping conventional drive systems for battery power that could approach $20 billion by 2030.

“As companies across many industries look to reduce their environmental impact, GM is uniquely positioned to serve as a leader not only through exciting new EVs across our brands, but through additional technology applications,” said Hester, “and we look forward to bringing customers — existing and new — along with us on our zero-emissions journey.”

Converting to electric

Demand for conversion technology is already on the rise. There’s been a flood of startups converting classic vehicles, including vintage Camaros, Porsches, Volkswagens and Land Rovers, to run on battery power.

GM targeted the conversion market with the launch of the eCOPO Camaro project car at the SEMA Show several years back, and has revealed other project cars like Project X and the 1977 K-5 Blazer. It is getting ready to provide what are essentially plug-and-play packages, like the Cruise eCrate and Electric Connect, to simplify the process. The goal is to allow owners and conversion companies to make a swap with a minimum of effort.

The Detroit automaker isn’t the only one sensing an opportunity here, however. Ford recently demonstrated the potential for its own Mach-E crate motors, which, as the name implies, uses hardware and software borrowed from its Mustang Mach-E battery-electric SUV. The conversion package can be plugged into classic products such as a 1978 Ford F-100 pickup. Volkswagen and Tesla have also gotten into the game, the latter automaker’s electric drive technology used by one conversion fan on a Rolls-Royce once owned by Johnny Cash.

Multiple applications for electric motors

But GM’s strategy isn’t limited to road-going vehicles.

It’s teaming up with Textron Ground Support Equipment Inc., a Textron subsidiary, to power up ground support equipment like the cargo and baggage tractors, belt loaders and Tug equipment found at commercial airports. Electrifying those vehicles promises to reduce emissions, as well as operating costs, while improving reliability, experts claim.

Commercial fleets, in general are showing strong interest in making the switch to battery power. GM this month began delivering the first of its BrightDrop delivery vans, joining competitors like Ford and Rivian in a market that could rapidly grow this decade, according to industry forecasts.

The opportunity to electrify isn’t limited to ground vehicles, however. A number of manufacturers are looking at ways to harness battery and hydrogen fuel-cell technology for other transportation and cargo applications. Rolls-Royce recently set a speed record with an aircraft outfitted with one of its drive systems. Airbus just released plans for a hydrogen turbofan system.

GM sees big opportunities coming in the marine world. It recently announced a strategic investment in the Seattle-based Pure Watercraft. The move, the automaker said, “represents an opportunity to bring EV technology to the marine industry and help preserve enjoyment of the outdoors for future generations. Together, the two companies will develop and commercialize battery electric watercraft, to accelerate the transition to electric mobility.”

GM also has been exploring ways to electrify the rails. Last June it announced another partnership with Wabtec, one of the largest providers of freight locomotives. Under a non-binding agreement, the automaker will provide both battery and hydrogen fuel-cell systems for prototypes like the Wabtec FLXdrive. Eventually, the technology could replace the conventional diesel-hybrid systems that dominate the rails today.

The shortage of microchips continues to drag on, forcing General Motors to idle virtually all of its North American production operations for as long as two weeks — though the automaker could yet extend this latest shutdown.

Wentzville Assembly
General Motors is basically shutting down its North American manufacturing operations due to the chip shortage.

GM is just one on a long list that includes virtually every automaker hit by the shortage — and its impact is being felt just about everywhere, from Stuttgart to Detroit to Beijing.

Industry planners hoped to put the shortages behind them by now. Barely a month ago, GM had signaled it had come up with new sources for some of the chips it needed. But that clearly didn’t meet its requirements.

No light at the end of this tunnel

The automaker will either close or extend closures at plants, such as the one in Wentzville, Missouri producing its Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups, another in Canada building the Chevy Equinox SUV, and the Ramos Arizpe facility in Mexico that assembles products like the Chevy Blazer SUV. All four of its North American brands will feel the heat.

Like some of its competitors, the automaker had been partially assembling vehicles, where possible, and then storing them until it could come up with the missing chips and electronic components. So, in some instances, GM will try to take advantage of the upcoming closures. It has secured enough chips, in some cases, to let it “repair and ship unfinished vehicles,” it said in a statement.

Wentzville Assembly
GM’s Wentzville plant, which produces its midsize pickups, is on the list to go down.

It was not revealed just how much production GM will lose due to the coming closures but some of those plants routinely produce more than 60 vehicles an hour on two or three shifts, many working overtime — when possible — to help rebuild inventories already drawn down as a result of last year’s pandemic closures.

Empty lots

Company officials indicated GM dealers now have barely half their normal stock of cars, trucks and crossovers which, this time of year, would run between 60- and 70-days’ supply.

Among the dealers TheDetroitBureau.com talked to, some indicated they have less than 10 vehicles in stock and are not sure when they will get more, especially when it comes to popular product lines like the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups.

And they’re not alone. Toyota has barely 10 days worth of some of its most popular vehicles, like the RAV4 SUV. The automaker last month warned it would cut global production by 40% this month, so shortages could, if possible, get even worse. In recent days, Stellantis, Nissan and Ford, among others, have announced further cuts.

Consumers paying the price

In turn, customers have been forced to either wait, extend their search or, in many cases, pay at or above sticker price. Some social media reports have highlighted dealer surcharges ranging anywhere from $5,000 to as much as $40,000 above MSRP.

That helped drive average transaction prices to a record of more than $41,000 in July, according to Cox Automotive, J.D. Power and other analysts. The figure is widely expected to have run even higher in August.

Sales for the month came in at an estimated, annualized rate of about 13.1 million, down from as high as 18.5 million earlier in the year.

The Labor Day weekend is normally one of the busier holidays at U.S. dealer showrooms but there is little hope, according to industry insiders, that it will generate anywhere near the normal levels seen in past years.

General Motors doesn’t want to share the sandbox with Ford when it comes to using “cruise” in the name of semi-autonomous driving technology.

Ford BlueCruise in F-150 driving
Ford is offering BlueCruise, a subscription-based version of Level 2 autonomous driving technology this fall.

In response to GM’s lawsuit against its fellow Detroit-area automaker, Ford asked the U.S. Patent Office to rescind the trademarks GM filed using the word. Officials claim that “cruise” is so generic a term that no one should be able to lay claim to it.

The “cruise” chaos came to the fore when Ford announced its new semi-autonomous driving technology in mid-April, dubbed BlueCruise. GM already employs two versions of the word for similar purposes. It’s Super Cruise technology performs a similar task to Ford’s new product. Meanwhile, it also owns a significant stake in Cruise LLC, which is developing autonomous vehicles to be used as robo-taxis in the San Francisco area.

Going to court

Cruise Bolt in SF
GM’s Cruise subsidiary is hoping to offer a fleet of robs-taxis in the near future.

“Ford’s decision to rebrand by using a core mark used by GM and Cruise will inevitably cause confusion between the parties, the affiliation, connection, or association between them, and/or origin, sponsorship, or approval of their goods and services,” GM said in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco where GM’s self-driving enterprise is testing the system without safety drivers. According to the lawsuit, GM, Cruise and Ford “engaged in protracted discussions” following Ford’s announcement, “but Ford insisted on moving forward with the ‘Blue Cruise’ name despite Cruise’s preexisting rights.”

GM and Cruise are asking for Ford to pay monetary damages related to the incident and for the manufacturer to stop using the BlueCruise name.

Cadillac’s Super Cruise system allows some hands-free driving but requires drivers to stay focused in the even of an emergency.

“While GM had hoped to resolve the trademark infringement matter with Ford amicably, we were left with no choice but to vigorously defend our brands and protect the equity our products and technology have earned over several years in the market,” according to Reuters.

Can’t sue if no infringement

While GM went to court, Ford — which contends the suit is without merit — instead went to the patent office. That move is seen by some as akin to pouring gasoline on a fire; however, company officials claim there was little choice.

“To defend itself, Ford has no choice but to ask the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to rescind both of GM’s “Cruise” and “Super Cruise” trademark registrations that should have never been registered in the first place,” Ford said. “Any number of companies use the word ‘cruise’ in connection with driver assist technology.”

Ford essentially contends the word cruise is commonly used by all automakers for similar technologies, in particular, cruise control. However, the automaker offered other examples, including “smart cruise control” by Hyundai, “predictive cruise” by Mack Trucks and more.

Top executives at Hyundai and General Motors reconfirmed each automaker’s commitment to produce a viable flying car, perhaps as soon as 2025, but more likely by the end of this decade.

Hyundai’s air taxi service could be operational as soon as 2025, Global COO Jose Munoz said.

Hyundai Global Chief Operating Officer Jose Munoz, who also heads up the company’s North American operations, told a group of investors and media that an air taxi service could be operational by 2025, if everything goes well.

He noted his company is ahead of its original timetable for producing a useable flying car, originally 2028.

“We see this market as a significant growth opportunity,” Munoz said Monday during the Reuters Events Car of the Future conference. The South Korean automaker’s new CEO, Euisun Chung, essentially declared the automaker was shifting to becoming a mobility company in the near-term future.

He specifically noted plans for flying taxis during his introduction as Chairman last October and the earlier debut of Hyundai’s $52 billion “Strategy 2025” plan which called for battery-electric cars and “personal air vehicles.”

In addition to luxury EVs for the road, GM revealed the Cadillac VTOL flying car concept at CES 2021 in January.

Hyundai’s not alone

Other automakers are also putting resources — human and financial — behind the effort to develop a flying car, including GM, Toyota, Daimler AG, Aston Martin and Geely. GM’s top tech officer, Pamela Fletcher, offered a more tempered view.

“I think that there’s a long pathway here,” she said, according to Reuters. “2030 is probably a real commercial inflection point.”

GM earlier this year rolled out a Cadillac flying concept vehicle at CES 2021. “It’s a very nascent space,” Fletcher later noted. “There’s a lot of work to be done on the regulatory side, as well as the actual technology side.”

In January, the company teased a four-rotor prototype dubbed the VTOL (vertical-take-off-and-landing), is “designed for the moment when time is of the essence and convenience is everything,” said Michael Simcoe, GM’s vice president of global design, at the time.Details about the VTOL were scarce, though Simcoe did note the concept would use a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The flying car would be targeted at Cadillac customers.

GM BrightDrop EV600 electric van

Merchants Fleet is working with BrightDrop to procure 12,600 BrightDrop EV600s, an all-new, electric light commercial vehicle.

General Motors has lined up a major new customer for its new, all-electric commercial van and reiterated its support to Lordstown Motors, the Ohio EV maker preparing to launch a new electric pickup truck.

New Hampshire-based Merchants Fleet said it plans to further electrify its portfolio with 12,600 new commercial vehicles from BrightDrop, the fledgling business backed by General Motors.

“Merchants Fleet’s move to add such a large number of BrightDrop EV600s to their portfolio signals their strong commitment to accelerate the electric fleet movement, and their belief that BrightDrop solutions will help them and their clients achieve a greener and more efficient future,” said BrightDrop President and CEO Travis Katz in a statement.

Customer to use GM new battery system

GM’s third-generation global electric vehicle platform with its Ultium battery technology.

The EV600 is powered by GM’s Ultium battery system that it’s producing in concert with South Korea’s LG Chem. The vans will be built at the GM CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, and Merchants Fleet expects the BrightDrop EV600s to enter its clients’ fleets starting in early 2023.

The new van is one of the 30 electric vehicles GM plans to launch during the next several years in a wide range of segments. GM’s goal is to sell more than a million electric vehicles annually by the middle of the decade.

Ideally for GM, thousands of those EV will be snapped up by fleet management companies, like Merchants Fleet, which is one of the nation’s fastest growing examples. BrightDrop says it is building a smarter way to deliver goods and services. The company says it plans to use electric first-to-last-mile products, software and services while improving overall sustainability.

GM renews endorsement of Lordstown Motors

In addition to the new deal, GM also offered a strong statement of support for Lordstown Motors, the new EV maker that purchased the company’s former plant in Lordstown, Ohio, hence the name.

Lordstown CEO Steve Burns announced the company’s plans to go public, in a reverse merger with DiamondPeak Holdings.

GM said it is by working closely with Lordstown Motors Corp. to support the launch of the battery electric Endurance pickup. Lordstown Motors is in the midst of a reverse merger by DiamondPeak Holdings Corp. That deal is expected to close during the fourth quarter and the company will be listed on the Nasdaq.

Additionally, GM is investing $75 million in the company, which includes the sale of the former Lordstown Assembly plant and production equipment, noting its support for Lordstown Motors dates back to May 2019 and is part of the company’s continuing support for the Lordstown community.

GM and LG Chem have formed a joint venture and together are investing more than $2.3 billion to build a new, state-of-the-art battery cell manufacturing plant in Lordstown that will create more than 1,100 new jobs. Construction of the facility is on schedule.

The new battery cell manufacturing plant will play a critical role in GM’s commitment to an all-electric future, GM said as it announced a new investment at GM plant in Toledo, Ohio.

GM to invest more in Toledo Transmission

GM is investing $75 million in its Toledo plant.

GM said it will invest $75 million in its Toledo, Ohio transmission manufacturing plant. The investment will increase the plant’s capacity to build 10-speed automatic transmissions that are used in GM’s full-size trucks. Work will begin immediately at the Toledo plant.

“Through this investment, we continue to take steps to strengthen our current core business and build on our significant manufacturing presence in Ohio,” said Phil Kienle, GM vice president, North America Manufacturing and Labor Relations.

Since 2009, GM has invested more than $3.3 billion in Ohio, Kienle noted. Toledo Transmission Operations opened in 1916 and now employs about 1,700.

GM is reportedly looking to apply for a banking charter for its financing unit, GM Financial.

General Motors has been generating plenty of attention for its plans to shift to battery-electric vehicle production; however, the auto company has also been looking to get back into some old businesses too, namely banking.

It’s an oversimplification, but the Wall Street Journal reported today that GM’s captive financing unit, General Motors Financial Company Inc. is seeking to apply for a banking charter. The move would allow the company to accept deposits — like a bank. The move is part of a strategy allowing it to form an industrial loan company.

The specialized charter gives a company the ability to own a commercial firm and banks — typically a no-no with a traditional banking license, the newspaper noted. GM has done this before with its GMAC unit, which not only offered auto loans, but also home mortgages and other types of lending options.

(GM financial arm strengthens loan portfolio.)

GM’s financing arm, GM Financial, has contributed to the auto company’s bottom line in growing amounts of significance during the past decade.

That could occur as early as next month, according to sources cited by the WSJ. The company has been nosing around the subject with federal and state regulators for several months. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and Utah Department of Financial Institutions are reportedly on board with this.

GMAC nearly failed during the Great Recession in 2008 due to subprime mortgages. The government bailed the unit it out and it was renamed Ally Financial, and GM eventually sold its stake in 2013. Ally Financial currently offers auto loans for several automakers, including Fiat Chrysler and Hyundai, as well as offering online banking resources.

According to WSJ sources, this would not be round two of GMAC, rather the deposits would be used to help with the automotive loan business. It would essentially act as a low-cost form of capital for those auto loans. Currently, the unit has to issue debt in order to provide financing for its customers. It’s possible the newly chartered unit would offer high-yield savings accounts as well as other deposit-based accounts to consumers.

(Treasury adds capital to GMAC Financial Services.)

GM isn’t alone in offering financing to potential buyers. In fact, it’s often part of the marketing push to draw customers into dealerships by advertising low rates on new car loans and leases. It gives dealers a chance to secure sales to buyers with less-than-ideal credit scores.

The move to accept deposits would give GM Financial a low-cost form of capital for auto loans.

In the case of GM Financial, it’s added some green to the company’s bottom line. It generated $14.5 billion in 2019, accounting for 10.6% of GM’s overall revenue, WSJ noted. In 2010, the unit’s revenue was less than 1% of auto company’s revenue while it rose to 4.2% in 2015.

Getting the industrial loan company structure in place wouldn’t make it unique in the auto industry, the newspaper noted. Toyota Motor Co. and BMW AG employ similar units to not only offer auto financing, but home mortgages and credit cards. What is different is that few companies have attempted to get back into that business since the 2008 banking collapse.

(GM delivers $4B in Q3 earnings as auto market rebounds.)

GM’s Chief Sustainability Officer Dane Parker outline the company’s plans for not just transforming vehicles, but also the facilities where they’re designed and built.

The auto industry is undergoing the most “significant transition” it has seen in a century, and General Motors doesn’t intend to be left behind, the automaker’s chief sustainability officer said during a media briefing ahead of the release of GM’s annual sustainability report today.

If anything, the company is accelerating plans to switch entirely to battery-electric vehicles, even as it continues to develop hydrogen fuel-cell technology. GM also is working to switch to zero-emissions sources to power its plants, said CSO Dane Parker.

“We’re very confident that … in a five- to 10-year timeframe, we’ll see a very different transportation industry,” Parker told reporters.

(GM reveals flexible EV platform, new “Ultium” batteries.)

The Chevrolet Bolt EV will be one of about 20 GM battery-cars on the market by 2023, the automaker says.

GM was one of the first carmakers to push seriously into electrification, its Chevrolet Volt becoming the first mass-market plug-in hybrid a decade ago. It is now focusing on pure battery-electric vehicles and Parker confirmed it will have “at least 20 by 2023,” about half of them having been previewed last March at one of two GM battery-car events in suburban Detroit.

That includes two versions of the all-electric GMC Hummer, a pickup and an SUV, coming next year, as well as an extended-length iteration of GM’s current long-range hatchback, the Chevy Bolt.

All told, the carmaker has now committed to “allocate more than $20 billion of capital and engineering resources to its electric and autonomous vehicle programs between 2020 and 2025,” according to a summary of GM’s 10th annual sustainability report.

As vehicle development work continues, the Detroit carmaker is also pushing ahead on construction of a new battery plant in Ohio that is part of its partnership with Korea’s LG Chem. The new Ultium batteries set to be produced there will have a higher energy density – meaning more power in a smaller pack – and lower cost, GM President Mark Reuss predicting the company could reach parity on the cost of an electric vehicle compared to a gas model by mid-decade.

GM just eliminated the Sonic so its Orion (MI) plant that now builds just the Bolt will get a second electric vehicle.

The Ultium batteries have other advantages, said Parker, noting they will use significant less cobalt than current lithium-ion cells. They will also be easier to replace than current batteries and will eventually be easier to recycle. One of the key goals outlined in the GM report is to either recycle or find post-life uses for Ultium batteries. There are numerous possibilities, Parker noted. That could include being used in grid backup systems that could help prevent blackouts and power surges.

“The vision we have for an all-electric future will result in the longer-term elimination of internal combustion engines,” said Parker, though he declined to lay out a specific timetable. One reason is that this could vary by market. Different countries, he added, “will have different timelines for us to get there.”

Europe, for example, is pushing aggressively to replace gas and diesel power, backing that with incentives and investments in a charging infrastructure. China is moving rapidly in that direction as well. But, at least under the Trump administration, the U.S. is moving more cautiously.

GM teased the GMC Hummer during the Super Bowl and has since confirmed there will be both pickup and SUV versions.

GM isn’t just looking at battery power. The automaker was an early proponent of hydrogen fuel-cell technology and two years ago launched a joint venture with Honda. The Japanese automaker, said Parker, is focusing on automotive applications for fuel cells. GM, on the other hand, is emphasizing stationary applications, such as back-up power for cellphone towers.

“When we look at what is the faster way to deployment (of zero-emissions vehicles), it’s battery electric,” Parker explained, noting that the big challenge for hydrogen is the lack of a refueling infrastructure. That’s one reason that automakers currently marketing fuel cell vehicles, such as the Honda Clarion, are largely limited to parts of California, where most U.S. hydrogen stations are located.

Parker did not rule out the possibility that GM could eventually use some of the fuel-cell stacks it plans to build at a new plant in Michigan for transportation applications. But “we do not plan to produce” those vehicles. Instead, he explained, “we are certainly ready to explore options to partner” with another company that might want to produce hydrogen trucks using GM stacks.

General Motors’ Arlington, Texas plant is using 100% wind-generated power.

Parker hinted the automaker will have news to make about its hydrogen program “in the coming months.”

GM has aggressively expanded its approach to clean technologies since Mary Barra became CEO in January 2014. That is not limited to its vehicles. The automaker also wants to switch from conventional to sustainable power sources for its factories. The goal was to get to 100% renewable sources by 2050, said Parker, but that recently was pushed ahead to 2050 worldwide. And the pace is going even more quickly in the U.S.

The big truck plant in Arlington, Texas is already using 100% wind-generated power and GM recently signed up with the TVA to deliver 100 megawatts of solar energy by 2023. That same year, it expects about 800 mW of clean electricity for its Michigan plants, with a goal of 60% renewable power for all operations in the U.S.

(GM increases uses of renewable energy.)

Noting the increased availability of green power, even as prices fall, Parker said “that gives us great confidence in (reaching) that number.”
